Not all Massage is created equal! With so many massage styles and variance with licensing in the profession it can be difficult to pick the right style and therapist for you. This article will tackle certain points that will help you choose the most appropriate massage for your needs.
1 Decide why you have chosen to get a massage. Are you looking for deep relaxation or are you looking for pain relief? Most Massage Therapists focus on one or the other. Some may combine both.
If you feel fatigue, stress, insomnia or anxiety a relaxation massage may be the right choice for you.
If you have acute pain (New pain or injury) you may want to get checked out by a doctor. People with acute pain usually feel sharp, burning or tearing the the soft tissue. Chronic pain is a sore ache that comes and goes over time. Both can feel so painful that movement is difficult.
2 You can search and compare practitioners through the internet and phone book. A therapist employed at a spa or private practice may use names such as "Relaxation Massage" or "Spa Massage". There technique will feel pampering and soothing. The goal of the treatment is to make you feel supremely relaxed while having your full body rubbed and kneaded.
If you want relief from pain, injury or tension you may need to pick a practitioner experienced in a more advanced bodywork. Modalities such as Myofasical Release, Trigger Point therapy, Clinical or Medical massage, or Rolfing use specific release techniques to help relieve pain, improve posture or correct a soft tissue injury. You'll find that these practitioners have knowledge of the body and how their therapy can help you specifically. The goal in this modality will be for relief while relaxation is a side effect.
3 Call the therapist and interview them before you book the appointment. If you don't click with you're therapist over the phone, chances are you will not enjoy their treatment. If you are looking for a relaxation treatment tell the therapist or receptionist that you want to relax, unwind and relieve some tension. They will be able to help you choose the right therapy for you. You may want to ask about the treatments procedures and if the facility has any amenities such as a sauna or shower.
When booking a therapeutic treatment use discrimination. Make sure to tell the therapist about your condition. If they are experienced they most likely will ask "how long have you had the pain?"or "Does the pain burn or ache?" This indicates that this therapist is trying to see what the specific problem is and if they can help.
