Mary Touches and Changes Lives

Mary Spohn has been fencing since she was 5 years old. But this isn’t what makes her unique. At age 15, she is an amazing humanitarian and a visionary.

This summer, Mary mailed a DVD to family and friends. She invited them to join her in a dream to forever change the life of a child who is blind.

You first hear music and see words float across the screen saying, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” by Mahatma Gandhi. It continues with “To reach out, to touch another life, to make a difference.” All the while, pictures from National Camps for Blind Children summer camps are flashing on the screen.

Then Mary, wearing her fencing attire, makes an appeal to the viewer of her DVD, “to give blind children an experience of summer camp and to make memories that will last a lifetime.”

Mary participated in this summer’s National Fencing Championships. Each touch of her foil on her opponent times a sponsor’s designated amount becomes the donation for NCBC. The sponsor receives a tax deductible receipt from NCBC. And a blind camper’s life grows and changes in immeasurable ways.

Mary’s dad shares, “Mary has tremendous insight into recognizing how things are and more importantly, seeing what they could become. Mary doesn’t wait for things to happen, but approaches each day with passion and enthusiasm!”

Thank you, Mary, for the positive charge you infuse in each of us with your example.
